A number is the beginning of a conversation.
“What’s your number today?” can be a gentle invitation to share. The useful part is what comes after the number.
Agree what the scale means
Try 1 = emotionally stretched and 10 = emotionally resourced. Let each person describe what those words mean for them. A 4 for you may feel different from a 4 for your partner. This is a conversation aid, not a mental-health assessment or a score for your relationship.
Ask with curiosity
Ask, “What is behind your number?” Then listen without trying to correct the answer. Someone can love you and still be having a very difficult day. They can also choose not to talk yet.
Make one specific offer
Ask whether listening, practical help, affection, or space would be welcome. If they want space, agree whether and when to check back in. Choose one small action you can actually follow through on.
Let both people matter
Take turns. Neither person has to match the other’s mood, and a higher number does not create a duty to carry everything. Both people’s needs and limits count.
